There are nursing stations in every medical center in the Directorate. Over 55
nurses with different academic levels, all certified by the Lebanese Ministry
of Health, make up the nursing team.
The Nursing pyramid consists of the Nursing Supervisor, In charge Nurse,
Registered Nurses (RN), Practical Nurses (PN) and Dental Assistance Nurses.
The supervisor is responsible for the management of the nursing care of the
patients and the supervision of the nursing personnel assigned to all the
centers. She plans, coordinates, provides, and evaluates patients on her unit.
In addition, she attends all the workshops and seminars done in the Health
Ministry. She attends the conferences invited from Medical Hospitals and other
health dispensaries. She also attends and organizes meetings done for her
nurses in the Directorate of Health and Social Services.
The Registered Nurse is considered the In charge and the Triage Nurse who has
the main load in each center. Her duties include welcoming and guiding the
patient within the center, performing nursing treatment, administering
medications and injections, and withdrawing blood test samples. The RN also has
the responsibility of admitting and discharging patients, giving routine
educational sessions and attending conferences to constantly be updated on
latest health issues. She does filing and screening through an in-house
developed computer program. She practices the Soap System with each patient
(Assessment, Observation, Implementation, Planning, and Evaluation). The RN is
also involved in the School Health
Program and Staff
Development Department.
To mention that Registered Nurses don't have permission to prescribe
medications, unless they hold an advanced practice degree with prescriptive
authority, but they are accountable for medication administration, including
the basic understanding of Medications, normal dosage, route of administration,
Side effects, and Contraindications. In October 2001, Registered Nurses in the
Directorate of Health and Social Services started Medications administration
program.
Immunization is the most important nursing procedure done in the directorate by
the Registered Nurse. Prevention of Disease is one of the most important goals
in child care and during infancy preventive measures can be carried out against
many infectious diseases. The program is commenced during the first year and
will not be completed until the early teens. Here are Available
Vaccines done in the Directorate of Health and Social Services.
The objectives of the Practical and Dental Assistant Nurses are to organize and
provide excellent nursing care as defined by standards. They must promote and
maintain a safe and pleasant environment under the direction of the supervisor
and the in charge nurse. PN's assist doctors and dentists with medical
procedures. They also sterilize and autoclave all medical equipment.
